A nice soapstone seems to invite softer, gentler features than a harder, coarser rock or a jade. The rock used in your art is not just a blank canvas for you to do with as you wish – it has features itself which must be respected, because if you let your material direct you, you will have far superior sculpture. If you launch into it with just the idea that you will make your project on any given piece of rock, you still might have something very good, but it will not be in harmony with the material.
