Organic "Natural" Search Engine Optimization versus Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Advertising By Matt Hockin When you purchase visitors or "clicks" from a search engine, this is called "pay-per-click" (PPC) search engine advertising (or PPCSE). Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Advertising allows you to quickly get top search engine placement by “bidding” (paying) for keywords related to your product or service. "Organic" or "Natural" search engine optimization (SEO) is accomplished by optimizing your web pages and by increasing your "link popularity" by acquiring or paying for links that point to your web site. This gives you high rankings at the Search Engines for your chosen search terms. In this article, we will explore the strengths and weaknesses of both methods of search engine marketing. "Natural" Search Engine Optimization Today, there is a big myth that natural search engine optimization is inexpensive and easy. For example, if you wanted your web site to rank high for the keyword phrase "life insurance" or "debt consolidation" you're going to need to budget a minimum of $50,000-100,000 a year! Yet still, natural search engine optimization usually gives you a much higher return on investment than pay per click. This is true for two main reasons: 1. More searchers click the natural search engine results versus the pay per click ads, so you’ll get much more traffic for less. 2. One of the biggest factors to improving your rankings with natural search engine optimization is by boosting your "Link Popularity" by acquiring or paying for links that point to your web site. These links give you lasting results by giving you top rankings and traffic from the search engines. Plus, the links themselves will provide a significant boost in long term traffic. With that said, the biggest weakness of natural search engine optimization is the time required to generate links and "tweak" your web pages and keywords to get those prized high rankings you so desire. It can literally take 3 months or more to finally enjoy the benefits of your search engine optimization campaign. Pay Per Click Search Engine Advertising The biggest benefit of pay per click is the fact that it will provide you with an immediate boost of qualified visitors, lead and sales giving you fast results within just hours or days. In fact, a pay per click advertising program is your best option if you seek fast results and a good return on investment while you are waiting for your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) program to "ramp up." Depending on your traffic goals, you can budget $100 or $100,000. PPCSEs also give you the added benefits of being able to quickly test your web site and track your conversion rates (leads, opt-ins, and sales) and turning keywords (visitors) on and off easily. So, as a short term strategy pay per click gives you the clear advantage over SEO. But, the disadvantage is the cost involved. Depending on the market demand for your keywords and clicks, your PPCSE campaign can generate tons of traffic and can cost hundreds, even thousands per day. With various optimization strategies you can lower your costs, but over the long term natural search engine optimization will give you a higher return on your marketing dollar. In Conclusion The golden rule in marketing is that you should constantly strive for maximum results and ROI for your budget. In other words, if your marketing is making you a profit - even if it’s a thin profit - it's worth it. By this model, pay per click is worth doing, but overall pay per click will leave you with thinner margins. The reason for conducting a natural search engine optimization campaign is to significantly increase your margins over the long term. ------------------------ Resource Box ---------------------- Matt Hockin is President of Interactive Marketing, Inc., a small business

Pay-Per-Click Advertising and Search Engine Optimization By Carrie Reeder There are pro's & con's to both Pay-Per-Click advertising and optimizing for natural search engine traffic. PPC advertising has many great benefits. First of all, you get your traffic going quickly. I have used this advantage many times. I test new products and even new websites through PPC advertising before making a decision to promote or scrap my new website or product idea. I am a firm believer in testing new products before throwing large amounts of money into advertising. PPC advertising is a great way to do this. For example, with Google's Adwords program, you can post your ad, pay a $5 sign-up fee and have highly targeted traffic to your website within an hour. How is that for efficiency? Also, you can moniter your click charges and stop them before they get too expensive. By the time you have spent your budget on clicks, you should have a pretty good idea of how successful your product is going to be. I think of PPC advertising as being the most useful when starting a new business or product. WIth PPC advertising, you can quickly and efficiently find out which keywords you need to target and which products are the most popular. Once that testing period is over, however, it's time to look into Search Engine Optimization. PPC advertising can be very expensive, costing hundreds, even thousands a month in advertising costs. Once you know what keywords to target, it's time to put together a plan on how you are going to optimize your website. The drawbacks to search engine optimization is that it requires a lengthy amount of time to get your site to rank high with your keywords. That is why I suggest using this method after the testing period is over, when you already know your business will be profitable. Search Engine Optimization is definately a slow way to get your website traffic if you plan on not using PPC traffic. It could be a long, expensive road before you even begin selling your product. Search engines can take months, even years to start pulling up high with the search engines. But, natural search engine traffic is definately the best long term way to get the majority of your traffic. When getting your site to start pulling up in SE natural listings there are 2 main things that need to be done: 1. Add Content
Search engine traffic requires you to submit your site to many different search engines and wait, maybe even months for them to spider your website. I have had much better luck with another route. You can pay a fee to have your website listed in a very high ranking directory like www.dmoz.com (free), www.yahoo.com's directory ($299), sbd.bcentral.com (only $50), or another website where your link is on a page that has a page ranking of 4,5,6 or higher. The sites I mentioned above have rankings of 8 or 9. When you have your link on a site with that high of a ranking, the search engines are spidering those sites constantly and will find your website and spider it very quickly. Not only will they find it quickly but because you are linked to a high ranking site, you will also rank higher with the SE. When looking for backlinks, focus on sites with content related to yours and high page rankings of 4 or higher. As for content on your site, try to include about 200-500 words of content or text on most of the pages of your site. Text makes your site bulkier. Make sure to integrate all of the keywords you want to target within the content of your site. Don't worry about cramming the same keywords in over and over. Search engines may possibly even blacklist your site for keyword stuffing, if you try to do that. There is a lot to know about Search Engine Optimization but, those are the 2 main factors when getting started. In summary, when starting out, I suggest using PPC advertising for testing products and keywords. Spend time optimizing your site for search engine traffic after you have tested your products and keywords. ------------------------ Resource Box ---------------------- Carrie Reeder has been a web marketer for 3 years and has

Everyone has unique information regarding something. Think about all the things you can do or know a lot about. How would you go about describing it someone else. Are you able to sit down with a friend, relative or co-worker and describe something of value or interest to them? If the answer is yes then you got the ability to write an article, mini-course or maybe even an ebook. You can do it if you just let yourself. "eBook Secrets Exposed" discusses niche marketing, selection of killer topics and ebook pricing. This is another informative resource that I use. ==> http://www.quiksystems.com/BMC/ESE.htm -------
All the guru marketers told me to build my own mailing list. It is the single most important thing you can do. I will tell you the same thing. If you haven't started already, start building your own targeted mailing list now! Don't wait until later when you think the time is right. The right time is now! It takes time and patience and definitely will not happen overnight. There are a number of different ways to start (or continue) to build your mailing list. There is a lot of information on this topic. There are 2 main things that I do that results in individuals joining my list. I encourage you to try them out if you haven't already. The methods I use include: 1. Write short articles (tips, how-to, etc) for publication in ezines published by other marketers. In my humble opinion, it is easier than you may think. Write on topics that you have good fundamental knowledge in. It helps to have a solid interest in the topic also. Use the resource box at the end of the article to get readers to sign-up for your mailing list. Perform a spell-check and have a friend or family member proof read your article to help locate mistakes or format problems. 2. Publish a F-R-E-E newsletter (ezine) for distribution to your list of subscribers and others that might get it from your web site and other sources. Make certain you provide quality and useful information that your subscribers want or need. It is a straightforward process if you write about something that you enjoy. Believe it or not there are plenty of people out there in Internet land that have common interests with you. Write about it and you will have a following! No topic is too small! As with the articles, perform a spell-check and have a family member proof read. I hope these tips are useful to building your own list. ============================================================
My newsletter will typically contain methods, strategies and articles on increasing the targeted and high-quality visitor traffic to your web site and building your own opt-in mailing list. My newsletter also contains both in-house and third-party advertising. You are under no obligation to purchase any of the products or services I inform you about. At present, I publish this newsletter on a monthly basis. You might receive approximately four commercial e-mails from me during the month. ============================================================
